Boxing Glove Sizing and Care Guide

Boxing gloves are sized by weight in ounces (oz), not the shoe-size style numbering you might expect. Picking the right oz weight affects both your hand protection and how well you can actually train.

How Glove Weight (oz) Works

Heavier gloves add more padding and resistance, which is useful for conditioning and reducing impact on your hands and wrists. Lighter gloves let you move faster and feel more precise, but offer less cushioning.

General Weight Guide

  • 8–10oz — competition gloves for lighter-weight boxers, or fast bag work.
  • 12oz — a good all-round choice for lighter individuals doing bag work and light sparring.
  • 14oz — suitable for most adults doing general training, pad work, and moderate sparring.
  • 16oz — the standard choice for sparring, offering more protection for both boxers.
  • 18–20oz — heavier training gloves, often used by larger individuals or for extended bag conditioning work.

As a rough guide, heavier body weight and more sparring-focused training both point toward a heavier glove. If you're mainly doing bag work and pad drills, you can generally size a little lighter.

Getting the Fit Right

Beyond the oz weight, the glove should fit snugly around your hand with your wrist wraps on — not so tight that you lose circulation, but not loose enough that your hand shifts inside the glove on impact. A properly fitted glove protects your knuckles and wrist through the full range of a punch.

Caring for Synthetic Leather Gloves

  • Air them out after every session — never zip them straight into a closed bag while damp.
  • Wipe the interior with a dry cloth or glove deodorizer to prevent odour build-up.
  • Avoid direct sun or heat when drying, as it can crack synthetic leather over time.
  • Store flat or hanging, not crushed at the bottom of a gym bag, to help them keep their shape.
